West Warwick Casino Plans Face Water Obstacle

9 July 2004

WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Providence Journal: "The president of the East Greenwich Town Council said yesterday that the Kent County Water Authority could not handle the additional water demand of a $600-million casino proposed for neighboring West Warwick.

"'The supply does not exist, either now or in the near future,' said Arthur C. Barton III, adding that 'the cost of providing the water to the casino will be a minimum of $25 million, and likely more.'

"Barton, who is running for Congress and is a casino opponent, spoke at a news conference he convened outside the West Warwick headquarters of the Kent County Water Authority.

"…West Warwick officials have said repeatedly that although improvements such as new pumping stations may be necessary, they would be financed by Harrah's Entertainment, and that the system is able to supply the 250,000 gallons per day the casino is expected to need…"
