West Virginia Track Seeks Earlier Activation of Slots

CHARLESTON, West Virginia – As reported by the Associated Press: "Charles Town Races & Slots officials say gamblers should be allowed to begin playing video slot machines earlier on Sundays.

"Claiming they are losing business to other states with extended Sunday hours, racetrack officials asked the state Lottery Commission on Friday to adopt the same hours of operation for each day of the week. On Sundays the state's 10,500 video slot machines are turned on at 10 a.m., but gamblers may play beginning at 7 a.m. on other days.

"Ameet Patel, executive vice president of the Jefferson County facility, says hotel guests are inconvenienced by the late Sunday start. Typically, 500 customers wait each Sunday morning for the machines to be switched on.

"…Delaware officials recently expanded their video lottery hours to 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily, a move Patel says is causing West Virginia to lose business…"
