West Virginia Split over Gambling Bill1 February 2006WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Charleston Daily Mail: "Opponents of table games legislation believe there's a culture clash between the Northern Panhandle and the rest of the state on gambling. "Delegates plan to introduce a bill today that would allow voters to legalize casino-style table games in the four racetrack counties -- Ohio, Hancock, Jefferson and Kanawha. "Two of West Virginia's racetracks -- Wheeling Downs and Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort -- are in the Northern Panhandle. "Legislators from that region are pushing the table games bill. "Many Republicans oppose the bill and assert that the Northern Panhandle depends too much on the gaming industry. It may have something to do with that area's historic acceptance of slot machines and numbers games, they say. "…Northern Panhandle lawmakers are stressing that the bill is about giving county voters an option to help their local economy…" |
