West Virginia Senate Want Gambling Machine Rollback

WHEELING, West Virginia – As reported by the West Virginia Intelligencer: "Candidates for the 1st Senatorial District of the West Virginia Senate say they want to "maintain the promise" of the state's Promise Scholarship, but that they also want to see in the state fewer of the gambling machines that fund the program.

"Both Incumbent Sen. Andy McKenzie, R-Ohio, and Democrat Tal Hutchins, a former state delegate, believe that students receiving the Promise Scholarship should be required to remain in West Virginia for a period upon college graduation.

"…Hutchins termed the Promise Scholarship 'a good program.'

"'But it is funded by gray machines,' he added, referring to what the machines were called before the state legalized them. 'We need to reign in the expansion of gray machines.'

"Hutchins also suggested that the state's students be stopped from 'taking advantage of the program' and leaving West Virginia after receiving their state-supported education.

"…McKenzie termed the gray machine legislation that allows gaming machines in the state, passed during his tenure, 'one of the worst expansions of gambling ever in West Virginia.'…"
