West Virginia Leaders, Locals Push for Casino Vote

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Charleston Gazette: "Hancock County residents and leaders converged on the Statehouse Tuesday, asking that residents of the four counties having racetracks be allowed to vote on whether to permit casino gambling.

"Supporters say table games, which include card games and roulette tables, would bring the state around $60 million a year.

"…Sporting buttons showing support for local referenda, supporters rode buses for hours to make the Charleston visit. Included was Hancock County Commissioner John Sorrenti, and mayors of the three municipalities in the county.

"'Let us decide our future,' said Sorrenti. 'It may not pass. It did not pass in Greenbrier County, and it may not in Hancock County.'

"…South Charleston Mayor Richie Robb, a GOP candidate for governor, said he supports local gambling options, calling it economic development…"
