West Virginia Lawmakers Address Gambling Next Year

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the West Virginia Intelligencer: "West Virginia lawmakers expect to address table gambling legislation next year - but probably not until after the fall 2006 elections are final.

"A bill that would have allowed table gambling at the state's four racetracks was tabled this year in Charleston, and comments from Northern Panhandle legislators suggest there were enough votes to pass the legislation during their recent special session.

"But their colleagues from elsewhere in West Virginia did not wish to vote on the issue in the year before an election, according to the local legislators. While they expect to see the legislation come up again in 2006, they suspect it may not come before them until as late as December 2006 - a month after the general election.

"…State Sen. Jeff Kessler, D-Marshall, said the table gambling issue 'will be revisited as early as January, or as late as after the next election.'…"
