West Virginia gaming referendum planned17 January 2007WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Charleston Daily Mail: "If lawmakers pass a referendum this session allowing voters to decide the fate of table games, it won't be the first local option presented to Kanawha County residents. "In 1994 they approved video lottery slot machines at the Cross Lanes race track by a vote of 16,324 to 15,385. The margin of victory was less than 2 percent. "The election was made possible by the Legislature that same year, when it wanted to legalize video lottery machines at the state's four tracks in Chester, Charles Town, Cross Lanes and Wheeling. "Several legislators this year have expressed support for doing the same. Voters in Kanawha, Jefferson, Ohio and Hancock counties would have the option to decide the table games issue at the polls. "In the past 13 years, there have been at least eight county elections regarding gambling and casinos. Five of the measures were passed, and three were rejected…" |
