West Virginia Gambling Expansion Meets Opposition

WHEELING CITY, West Virginia – As reported by the Wheeling News-Register: "At least one member of Wheeling City Council said he will not tolerate the possible expansion of video gambling machines and bars into the city's neighborhoods.

"Councilman Barry Crow, who is a member of the city's Planning Commission, voted last week to deny requests for the inclusion of video gambling lounges in a pair of Wheeling businesses located in or near residential neighborhoods.

"Special use permits for video lottery lounges at the Warwood Deli and Convenient Food Mart on Kruger Street were turned down last Monday by the Planning Commission. Even though they were voted down, the requests must still go before city council for review.

"…In order to operate video gambling machines, which are allowed under state law, an establishment must have a liquor license.

"…He said families in similar neighborhoods fear convenience stores and coffee shops changing hands and turning into such an establishment…"
