West Virginia Gambling Centers Win Ad Grants

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Charleston Gazette: "Despite new rules intended to make it easier for convention and visitors' bureaus and 'mom-and-pop' tourist attractions to get state grants, the big-dollar attractions racked up the lion's share of 29 matching advertising grants approved by the state Tourism Commission Monday.

"The state's 'racino' racetrack and gambling centers continued to be the big winners. Three of the tracks claimed $4.56 million in grants, out of $5.76 million awarded by the Tourism Commission.

"Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Center was awarded a $2 million grant for a $4 million multimedia campaign, continuing its 'We'll Leave the Slots on For Ya!' theme.

"…The only other grant over $1 million went to Charles Town Races and Slots for a marketing campaign. The state grant is for $1.74 million, 50 percent of the $3.48 million ad campaign. Most of those funds, $2.46 million, will go to buy radio and television airtime in Washington and Baltimore.

"Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center received the third-largest matching grant, at $825,000…"
