West Virginia gambling battles heats up25 January 2007WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph: "The West Virginia gambling battle is getting even more tangled as the administration has asked for more financial returns than the gambling promoters want to pay. "The Manchin administration wants to double the state's proposed income in the anticipated racetrack table games bill and will most likely have to go to battle in one of several issues the lawmakers will face in the table games issue. "Supporters reportedly planned to propose a 12 percent tax on gross proceeds in the bill slated to be introduced next week. "State Lottery Director John Musgrave announced Wednesday his agency wants 24 percent return from the lottery games which will include blackjack and craps. "… State Racing Association President John Cavacini reported his members want a 12 percent tax rate. He said it would allow the racing association members to reinvest and continue to build and develop destination resort facilities…" |
