West Virginia Bill Would Allow Gambling Expansion Vote

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "In the game of attracting the region's gamblers to racetrack casinos, West Virginia is about to raise the stakes.

"State Sen. Andrew McKenzie, a Republican from Wheeling, plans to introduce a bill today that would allow voters in four counties with racetracks to decide whether to add casino-style table games to the slot machines that already ring up $854 million in annual profit.

"'I expect a very spirited debate,' McKenzie said. 'West Virginia is probably not much different than Pennsylvania in that respect. But I do believe that our legislation will get through this year.'

"…The two West Virginia racetracks located a little more than an hour's drive from Pittsburgh attract a large percentage of gamblers from Pennsylvania and Ohio -- and want to keep it that way…"
