West Virginia Ad Ban Criticized

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Wheeling News Register: "Strict, prompt enforcement of a ban on certain types of outdoor advertisements for gambling establishments was the right thing for West Virginia authorities to do.

"…But in a few cases - very few - the Lottery Commission may want to reconsider whether the plug should have been pulled on some video gambling machines.

"…A few weeks ago, in response to public outrage over some advertising by establishments with video gambling, Gov. Bob Wise announced that no signs - none at all - would be allowed to advertise gambling of any kind in such businesses. Owners of the establishments in question were notified by letter, and there was ample publicity concerning Wise's order. He made it effective on New Year's Day.

"…Those found not to be obeying the ban had their gambling machines turned off. Thirty-three businesses, including seven bars and clubs in this area, were affected.

"…Some of the affected business owners may have grounds for complaint, however. In Wheeling, for example, the Double J Club had its machines turned off because the establishment's very name was deemed to be gambling related…"
