Waterloo, Iowa Wins Tight Casino Site Poll4 March 2005IOWA –As reported by the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier: "Downtown Waterloo won by a nose in a straw poll on competing gambling sites at a business exposition this week. "The unscientific two-day poll was conducted by Matt Parrott & Sons office supply company during the Grand Slam Business Expo at The Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center, using one of the voting machines it sells. "Of the 526 people who voted, downtown Waterloo received 168 votes, or 31.9 percent. Waterloo Greyhound Park received 154 votes, or 29.3 percent. A site near Lost Island Adventurepark south of Crossroads Center received 130 votes or 24.7 percent. Another 74 people, or 14.1 percent, favored none of those sites. "Proponents of all three sites have applied for a state license to open a floating casino, along with other sites around the state. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission will decide that issue over the next two months. "…Waterloo Chamber Ambassador Kathy McCoy, wife of Mayor Tim Hurley, glanced at the ballot, then looked up and gasped , "Oh, God!" when she saw a reporter standing nearby. "…The poll was not exactly conducted at a neutral site, since the convention center is downtown. Also the Cedar Valley Gaming Co., proponents of the downtown boat, were conducting a meeting with potential shareholders on the center's second floor…" |
