Washington Tribe Buys Hotel for Casino

WASHINGTON – As reported by the Tacoma News Tribune: "The Puyallup Tribe of Indians on Tuesday bought some 20 acres along Pacific Highway East - including a hotel that will be used as a casino.

"The Best Western Fife Hotel and Convention Center will be transformed - pending state approval - into an upscale hotel-casino. The tribe hopes it will generate revenue, and Fife Mayor Mike Kelley expects it will provide new customers for city businesses.

"…The purchase includes land now containing a restaurant, bank branch and other businesses. Tribal Chairman Bill Sterud said the tribe would honor all lease agreements with those tenants.

"Best Western employees were told of the sale Tuesday, and all will be retained if they wish to remain, Sterud said.

"The purchase price was not disclosed, but the tribe has said it will spend a total of $45 million to move its gaming facilities from the current Emerald Queen riverboat casino site on the Port of Tacoma waterfront to both a recently launched casino along Interstate 5 in East Tacoma and to the Best Western…"
