Washington Town Against Tribal Casino

LA CENTER, Washington – As reported by the KATU News: "A representative from the Bureau of Indian Affairs got an earful from angry La Center residents Wednesday evening about a proposed casino in the area.

"The casino controversy has been brewing for months because La Center already has privately run casinos that help fund the city's coffers.

"…The Cowlitz Indian Tribe does not have a reservation, but they want to establish one on the land, which is located just off Interstate-5 at La Center, and then build a casino.

"However, La Center already has privately owned card rooms that many fear could be put out of business by a Vegas-style Indian casino complete with flashy slot machines.

"…The card rooms already in place generate enough money to make up nearly three-quarters of the city's budget…"
