Washington Proposed Tax Delayed23 February 2005WASHINGTON – As reported by the Seattle Times: "For three months, Lake Stevens will shelve a proposed gambling tax while city officials make sure it wouldn't hurt existing businesses too much. "The City Council was set last week to vote on the measure, but opposition from a business owner prompted a second look. "Bill Tackitt, the owner of the Buzz Inn Steakhouse chain, said any gambling tax imposed by Lake Stevens could force him to look for another location. "The Buzz Inn is one of two businesses in the city that would be affected by the gambling tax, which officials have estimated would raise more than $37,000 annually. The other is B.C. MacDonald's Pub & Eatery. Both offer pull-tab games, which would be taxed at 5 percent of gross receipts, as would punchboards. "…Tackitt told council members last week that his Lake Stevens location doesn't do enough business to afford a gambling tax. He said he uses gambling earnings to subsidize food costs and keep meal prices as low as possible…" |
