Washington Group Focuses on Casino

WASHINGTON – As reported by the Columbian: "When former La Center councilman Richard Curtis won a seat in the state Legislature, he promised not to abandon one of the issues that spurred him to get into politics in the first place: plans for a tribal casino near his hometown of La Center.

"To spread the word about the project and explore its impacts, Curtis helped organize an 'intergovernmental roundtable,' a group of one to two dozen elected officials who have met since the beginning of the year to talk about how a tribal casino proposed by the Cowlitz Tribe would affect Southwest Washington. The group doesn't have the power to make any decisions and won't come to any conclusions. Its function is simply to inform, Curtis said. The meetings will continue as long as roundtable members feel they are useful.

"…Presenters, including Cowlitz tribal member David Barnett, have talked about the casino proposed for 152 acres at Northwest 319th Street near La Center.

"…Kamie Biehl is eager to offer a different perspective. She lives near the land proposed for a casino and helped found a group called Stand Up for Clark County Citizens. That group has vociferously opposed a tribal reservation in Clark County…"
