Washington Gambling Measure Falters

15 September 2004

WASHINGTON – As reported by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "A measure that would have outlawed card room gambling within Kenmore city limits appeared to be failing in early election returns last night.

"'It's disappointing,' said Allan Van Ness, a leader of Citizens for a Better Kenmore -- a group of retirees, church members, local professionals, Gamblers Anonymous members and City Council members who banded together in an effort to pass the measure.

"Kenmore's only card room is in the rear of Kenmore Lanes, a popular 50-lane bowling alley that has been a community fixture for more than 40 years.

"…Supporters of the ban said they were fighting to retain the family-friendly character of their suburban bedroom community of 19,000…"
