Washington Casino Tribe Offered to Help NASCAR Project

WASHINGTON – As reported by the Seattle Times: "The Tulalip Tribes proposal to help fund a NASCAR track in Snohomish County might have saved the project, state Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, said yesterday.

"McCoy, a tribal leader, said he proposed last week that the tribes partner with state and local officials to bring the track to Marysville. In exchange, he wanted help passing legislation that would give tribes more taxing authority. But he said local officials ended negotiations with the track developer before considering his offer.

"…The county and city negotiated for about seven weeks with ISC before reaching an impasse over the corporation's contribution. ISC would commit only $50 million to the $300 million project and couldn't guarantee the track would land a race in NASCAR's biggest series, the Nextel Cup.

"Paul Roberts, who worked on the project in Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon's office, said the tribes might have been able to help financially, but they couldn't have solved other problems facing the project. Cost estimates on preparing the property for development were rising because of environmental concerns, and time was running out to prepare a proposal before the legislative session starts…"
