Washington casino license gets hearing21 June 2007WASHINGTON -- As reported by the Bellingham Herald: "In an attempt to head off a lawsuit, the state Liquor Control Board announced Wednesday that it will refer the Nooksack Indian Tribe's application for a new casino liquor license to an administrative law judge for review. "The board decided on May 4 that it would grant the license, over objections from Whatcom County and Lynden officials as well as nearby residents. In granting the license, the board also ruled that the county had no legal standing to demand a hearing on the matter, since the casino site at Northwood and Halverstick roads was on Indian trust land. "Brian Smith, a liquor board spokesman, said the board is reversing its earlier determination that the county had no right to a hearing..." |
