Washington casino hearings wrap up

WASHINGTON -- As reported by the Columbian: "Clark County commissioners wrapped up their hearings Tuesday on possible changes to the deal they cut with the Cowlitz Indian Tribe four years ago without offering any indication of what will come next.

"...About 35 people testified Tuesday. Casino opponents outnumbered supporters by a 3-2 ratio, which was more balanced than the largely anti-casino sentiment voiced during the first hearing, April 7 in La Center.

"Most speakers either praised or panned the $510 million casino project, proposed for a 152-acre site west of La Center, and did not offer substantive comments on how the 2004 memorandum of understanding could be improved.

"A couple of those suggestions, restricting the casino's size or prohibiting gambling on the site, almost certainly would be unacceptable to the tribe..."
