Washington Card Room Raided

LA CENTER, Washington – As reported by the Columbian: " An estimated 50 federal and state agents raided La Center's cardroom district Wednesday in an investigation of alleged bookmaking and immigration visa fraud.

"The raid, which resulted in several arrests, stemmed from investigations by the Washington State Gambling Commission and agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, part of the Department of Homeland Security, officials said.

"Undercover agents with the gambling commission for several months had been looking into cardroom employees who had been engaged in bookmaking, typically taking bets on the outcome of sports contests, said Amy Blume Hunter, administrator of the commission's communications and legal division.

"She said George Teeny, owner of the New Phoenix and Last Frontier cardrooms in La Center, cooperated with the state's investigation into at least four cardroom employees.

"…About 22 gambling agents seized more than $100,000 cash and arrested several people on gambling allegations in the La Center operation, Hunter said…"
