W.V. expanded gambling bill moves ahead

16 February 2007

CHARLESTON, West Virginia – As reported by West Virginia State Journal: "A bill to authorize local referendum elections on casino-style table games in the four counties with racetracks moved one step closer to passage in the House of Delegates Thursday.

"During a five-hour floor session, the delegates debated 24 amendments to House Bill 2718. Just six amendments were approved, none of which are considered substantive changes to the legislation.

"Two amendments each took more than an hour to debate — one to remove language from HB2718 that declared table games the 'intellectual property' of West Virginia and another bill that would have required a constitutional amendment to allow for table games.

"…At the end of the day, HB2718 advanced to third reading, which means it will be up for House passage Feb. 16.
