Voters Say 'Yes' to Casino1 September 2004Washington County, OREGON -- As reported by the Iowa City Press: "A vote for riverboat gambling in Washington County narrowly passed Tuesday to the relief of residents who for years have been praying for progress to touch their small town. "Cheers and applause filled Murphy's Bar and Grill in Riverside as more than 70 people shook hands and hugged after hearing unofficial results from a riverboat gambling referendum. "With 52.2 percent of the unofficial vote, county residents approved riverboat gambling. The results mean Catfish Bend Casinos can put together an extensive application for a gambling license from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. "...Fort Madison-based Catfish Bend Casino is proposing to build an $80 million casino and 200-room resort, an 18-hole golf course, a 2,000-seat event center and space for more than 70 housing units and an RV park. Catfish Bend promises 600 jobs and $70 million in gross revenues from 1.6 million visitors a year..." |
