VLT Lawsuit a Long Shot, Believes Gambler27 September 2004HALIFAX -- As reported by the Canadian Press: "Eric O'Rourke has bet on everything from horses to video lottery terminals in his life, but he says he won't stake anything on a class-action lawsuit filed last week against the Nova Scotia government and the Atlantic Lottery Corp. The resident of Elmsdale, N.S., who says he's struggled with gambling addiction for 40 years, considers the legal action, meant to force the province to ban VLTs and compensate addicts, a long shot at best. "The notice of intention for the lawsuit was filed last week at the Nova Scotia Supreme Court by lawyers for Bernie Walsh, a recovering gaming addict and anti-gambling crusader. "If a judge agrees a class-action suit is appropriate, Walsh will be looking for other gamblers to join him, but O'Rourke is dubious as to how many addicts will actually take part. "...The problem with the case is its scope, O'Rourke said. "He believes Walsh is asking too much by expecting a judge or a jury will ever order a ban on VLTs, let alone compensation for gambling losses. "...O'Rourke said the lawsuit might be more realistic and appealing to gambling addicts if it was focused almost exclusively on forcing the provincial government to increase support for anti-gambling programs..." |
