Visitors Return to Atlantic City for First Weekend After Strike Ends

ATLANTIC CITY -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It was business as usual on the Boardwalk this weekend for the first time in a month.

"Days after striking casino workers returned to work, tourists who had stayed away from the picket lines returned to the city, crowding its gaming tables, buying souvenirs and strolling the now-peaceful Boardwalk.

"Businesses welcomed the renewed crowds, saying the monthlong casino service workers' strike had kept customers away.

"...On Oct. 1, 10,000 members of the hotel and casino workers' union, Local 54 of Unite Here, went on strike, picketing seven casinos with drums, signs and shouts up and down the Boardwalk. The union and casinos agreed on a contract Monday, and workers returned to their jobs Thursday.

"...The Atlantic City Convention & Visitor's Authority has been publicizing the end of the strike with news releases reminding people that the city is "always turned on" and that it is again "open for business."

"...Although it will take months to gauge the overall impact of the strike on the city's economy, owners of smaller Boardwalk businesses said they had suffered and hope business will now rebound..."
