Virtual casino helps problem gambling study

ONTARIO -- As reported by the Charlatan: "A simulated casino has been added to the Guelph University campus after receiving funding from the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre.

"The university's Problem Gambling Research Lab is equipped with eight slot machines and a Panoscope 360, a virtual reality viewer that displays a 360-degree image of a casino environment.

"...The focus of the lab is to research casino environments and designs, said Guelph communications officer Deirdre Healey.

"...Healey said the lab's first study will look at the effect music can have on how someone plays slots.

"...The lab's organizers said they hope their findings will be used to treat people with gambling addictions.

"...Catherine Schellenberg, public relations director at the Casino du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, Que., said her casino might consider hosting researchers..."
