Virginia Lottery Reports Record Q128 October 2004RICHMOND, Virginia – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Breaking records is becoming the norm at the Virginia Lottery. Today Executive Director Penelope W. Kyle announced that the first quarter of fiscal year 2005 was the best first quarter in the Virginia Lottery's 16-year history. "Our sales topped $304.2 million during the months of July, August and September," says Kyle. "That translates into $98 million for K-12 education in the Commonwealth." The $304.2 million in sales for the first quarter broke the old record by a margin of nearly $27 million. This is the third straight year that the Lottery has set a record with its first quarter sales. Virginia Lottery players and retailers also hit the jackpot for the first three months of the fiscal year. Players won $174.5 million in prizes and retailers earned $17 million for selling Virginia Lottery games. "With the best first quarter results in 16 years, the Virginia Lottery is off to another excellent start for this fiscal year," said Kyle. "And what is promising is that we experienced strong sales in all Lottery product categories in a quarter that historically produces the lowest sales." It was just two months ago that Governor Mark Warner joined Kyle to announce that the Lottery had shattered the previous yearly records for sales and profits for education. The Lottery had sales of $1.26 billion in fiscal year 2004, and raised more than $408 for Virginia's public schools K-12. The sales figures for the first quarter of fiscal year 2005 show that the record pace continues. All profits from the Virginia Lottery go to public school education (K-12) in the Commonwealth.
