Vintage Vegas4 March 2003LAS VEGAS -- As reported by the Mercury News: ``In the blinding glare of nighttime neon, I wasn't sure I was driving in the right direction. It can get confusing on Las Vegas Boulevard when the sun sets and the lights flicker to life -- a mix of people, traffic and illumination unmatched anywhere. It would have been simple if I were looking for the Venetian or Mandalay Bay, two of the Strip's more exotic and expensive mega-resorts. But I was trying to find the Algiers Hotel -- small, old and obscure but not without some charm. The Algiers doesn't have a casino or showroom; it doesn't offer room service. The bar is cramped, and the rooms have a slightly stale odor to them -- but it's a wonderful throwback, a kitschy Vegas relic that may not appeal to most travelers but is worth a look next time you're visiting.
