Vietnam May Allow Soccer Betting

VIETNAM – As reported by the Bangkok Post: "Vietnam is considering whether to set up a football book that would take legal bets, according to a report today by China's Xinhua news agency. Authorities now believe a soccer betting business would earn funds for the country's sports bodies, and help to prevent rampant illegal betting which is getting out of hand.

"The move comes immediately after the country's biggest sports scandal. The top striker and other players on the Vietnam national team have admitted taking money from bookies to shave points in the win against Burma at the recent Southeast Asia Games in the Philippines.

"…Although betting on sports is illegal in Vietnam, it is common, especially in urban areas.

"…Xinhua quoted the Vietnamese newspaper Pioneer as saying that a document sent to the Vietnam Football Federation on Jan 5 by Nguyen Danh Thai, director of the country's National Sports and Physical Training Committee, said the committee will submit to the government a scheme on launching a soccer betting service for approval in the coming time…"
