Victoria's Gamblers' Losses Down Again

VICTORIA, Australia – As reported by the Australian Associated Press: "The state's poker machine gamblers lost $2.29 billion (US$1.6 billion) last financial year - $270 million (US$189.46 million) less than the all-time high.

"It is the second successive year losses have fallen since the introduction of gaming-room smoking bans in 2002.

"Figures released yesterday by the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation reveal a reduction in gaming losses in regional areas including Campaspe, Swan Hill, Boroondara, Bayside and Nillumbik. But losses increased slightly in Ballarat, Cardinia, Casey, East Gippsland, Melton, La Trobe, Warrnambool, Wyndham and Shepparton.

"…Gaming Minister John Pandazopoulos attributed the fall in player losses to the tobacco bans and a series of government gambling measures, including ATM withdrawal limits and a reduction in the number of 24-hour venues…"
