Victorian pokie results reported

31 January 2008

VICTORIA, Australia -- As reported by the Australia Herald Sun: "Victorian poker machine gamblers have lost a record $1.35 billion in just six months.

"The surging losses put punters on track to smash the all-time annual mark of $2.56 billion, set before the introduction of smoking bans in 2002.

"State Government figures show the six-month losses at Tatts and Tabcorp venues since July are $54.7 million greater than the year before.

"The total does not include Crown casino's 2500 pokies.

"...The Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation figures reveal gamblers blew a staggering $235 million statewide in August.

"State Opposition gaming spokesman Michael O'Brien said it was clear the pokies industry had recovered the ground lost by the introduction of venue smoking bans..."
