Victorian councils get pokie powers

VICTORIA , Australia – As reported by the Australian: "Steve Bracks has bowed to pressure to curb problem gambling by giving councils powers to reject new poker machines and imposing new caps that will result in 550 machines being moved from poor areas into wealthier ones.

"The Victorian Government will today announce plans to extend its caps on pokies numbers to include Geelong, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Shepparton and some metropolitan areas, including the City of Monash.

"Councils throughout the state will get to vet any plan from venue operators to bring new machines into their region, including the 550 displaced under the new caps…"
