Victoria casinos face ATM ban

VICTORIA, Australia -- As reported by the Australia Herald Sun: "Automatic teller machines will be banned in all Victorian pokies venues under a Brumby Government crackdown on problem gambling.

"Victoria will become the first state to pull cash machines out of gaming venues in a trend that could become national.

"The Herald Sun yesterday revealed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had ordered a review to consider ways to smash the nation's pokies scourge.

"Premier John Brumby reacted swiftly by announcing that ATMs would be banned from Victorian pokies pubs and clubs when current poker machine licences expire in 2012.

"...Gambling industry chiefs were privately seething yesterday but chose not to publicly attack Mr Rudd or Mr Brumby.

"One industry source told the Herald Sun there was 'zero' research or evidence to suggest the ATM ban would help a single problem gambler..."
