Vernon Downs Receives Smoking Waiver

VERNON – As reported by the Oneida Daily Dispatch: ``Vernon Downs will be one of the first local businesses to take advantage of the county smoking waiver.

``The Oneida County Public Health Department granted the harness racing facility the waiver on Feb. 2.

``County health officials reviewed the track's proposed smoking room at the west end of the lower clubhouse called the "Miracle Mile Room" and found the track met the department's guidelines and criteria for the waiver.

``The smoking ban went into effect last July and the county developed the smoking waiver just last month. To be eligible, businesses must prove either financial hardship resulting in a 10 percent loss of business over the past two years, or must show proof of expenditures due to installation of airation-ventilation systems prior to when the law went into effect..."
