Vernon Downs granted reprieve

VERNON, New York -- As reported by the Utica Observer Democrat: "Vernon Downs has been granted a racing reprieve by a state board again.

"The horse racetrack was issued race dates through June 30 by the New York State Racing & Wagering Board Thursday.

"The board also mandated that Vernon Downs discuss any future race date cancellations with its race judges and horsemen, and document those discussions if it applies for future cancellations.

"Vernon Downs had applied for 90 racing days to take place between April 6 and Nov. 3, but it has canceled six of those dates because of a shortage of horses.

"In response, the board has been issuing race dates on a month-to-month basis, board spokesman Daniel Toomey said..."
