Vernon Downs Fires Back with Counter Lawsuit

UTICA, New York – As reported by the Associated Press: "The owners of Vernon Downs have filed a lawsuit accusing a New York City businessman and several former track officials of trying to destroy the upstate New York harness track's reputation.

"Mid-State Raceway Inc. said the group is spreading 'vituperative' lies about the track so it can purchase it for less money. The group's actions 'have cost (Vernon Downs) millions of dollars and threaten its very existence,' said the lawsuit filed Tuesday in state Supreme Court.

"The defendants included Jeff Gural, owner of a New York City real estate company whose bid to buy Vernon Downs was rejected in November, and John Signorelli, the track's former president.

"…The track has two license applications pending with the state, one to race horses next season and another to open a casino. Track officials say the casino's electronic gaming machines could bring in $80 million a year. But the casino cannot open unless the track has a license to race horses…"
