Vernon Downs bets on video gambling

VERNON, New York -- As reported by the Utica Observer-Dispatch: "When Vernon Downs opens its new video gambling facility Oct. 26, the long-suffering harness track expects to receive a major infusion of revenue that it could depend on year-round.

"Similar operations opening in recent years at other harness tracks across the state report a surge of visitors. Interviews and figures show that the harness horses are fast becoming a secondary attraction to the new gambling emporiums.

"In all, seven video-gambling facilities have opened, with Vernon Downs and another due to open soon. Two weeks ago, the six facilities open at the time brought in an average of $1.3 million in income from the machines, state records show.

"…In some places, these machines are considered just as important — if not more important — than the horse racing. At Vernon Downs, for instance, the machines were seen as the key to the struggling track even reopening. The reason is straight-forward: The machines bring in millions of dollars and lure thousands of tourists each year…"
