Vancouver Approves Downtown Slots Deal12 March 2004VANCOUVER -- As reported by the CBC: ``Vancouver city council has now officially reversed its position on a casino with 600 slot machines at the Plaza of Nations – following a temporary setback for the project earlier this week. ``At a routine rezoning by-law meeting on Tuesday, council had voted to reject the proposal – with councillor Tim Louis taking advantage of the absence of councillor Jim Green, who supports the casino. ``But two of the council members opposed to the casino – Anne Roberts and Peter Ladner – who voted against the by-law on Tuesday have changed their minds, and voted with supporters of the casino. ``...Roberts says as much as she doesn't want slot machines in the city, using a by-law to stop the casino wasn't the right thing to do. ``...Tuesday's vote was the first time in 28 years that a council policy decision was reversed at the by-law stage..." |
