University of Iowa Students Mixed on Casino Decision

IOWA – As reported by the Iowa Press-Citizen: "Some University of Iowa students say a new casino to be built near Riverside could bring in revenue to rejuvenate the town. Others say students will treat the business like a joke, taking the nearly 20-minute trip from Iowa City to Riverside a few times a year for some laughs.

"…The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission voted 4-1 Wednesday to award a license for a casino, hotel and golf course near Riverside, population 928.

"…'I think a lot of students here would end up going there because it's so convenient and close,"'said Kristine Evenson, 24, a UI graduate student.

"…The highest age group of American problem gamblers is 19 to 24 years old, said Ken Winters, a University of Minnesota professor who studies youth gambling.

"However, some say a casino near Riverside could help beautify the town.

"'I think if it's going to bring in money to the city, they should do it,' said UI sophomore Mary Arroyo, 19…"
