University launches gambling studies center

NEW JERSEY – As reported by the New Jersey Star-Ledger: "As college basketball fans prepare to immerse themselves in March Madness, scholars at Rutgers University are taking an academic look at the world of gambling.

"Yesterday, the school announced the creation of a new Center for Gambling Studies, which will delve into everything from sports betting to Internet poker to gambling's social and legal impacts.

"…Lia Nower, a nationally known scholar on gambling and director of the new center, said the research is important because legalized gambling is a huge economic engine in New Jersey and both legal and illegal gambling are growth industries.

"…Additionally, researchers recently began studying how to improve training programs for gambling counselors across the United States. They also created a consortium of experts from industry, government and academia to study legal and policy issues, including a proposal in New Jersey to put slot machines at racetracks…"
