Union Wants Casino Jobs

MICHIGAN – As reported by the (Michigan) Times Herald: "The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers has been talking with the Bay Mills Indian Community about organizing workers at a casino the tribe hopes to open in Port Huron.

"'We not only want jobs in this area, we want good jobs,' union official Richard Cummings said.

"Unemployment in St. Clair County is at 13%, said Cummings, president of the Michigan Machinists Council, the union's political arm in Michigan.

"…The Bay Mills tribe, which owns two tribal casinos, wants to build a third casino at the Thomas Edison Inn near the Blue Water Bridge in exchange for dropping its claims to ancestral lands in the Upper Peninsula's sparsely populated Charlotte Beach area.

"Meanwhile, there are rumblings of union activity at other existing or proposed tribal casinos in Michigan and other states.

"Those efforts gained momentum in May, when the National Labor Relations Board decided tribal casino employees have the same right to organize as private-sector workers…"
