Union tries its luck at Foxwoods

CONNECTICUT -- As reported by the Hartford Courant: "Three months after launching an organizing drive at Foxwoods Resort Casino, the United Auto Workers union has more than enough signatures to petition for an election among workers and may be close to doing so, several people familiar with the drive said.

"The union has scheduled a press conference this morning. On Thursday, organizers would say only that the event is to discuss the workers' next steps in organizing the casino in southeastern Connecticut.

"The United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, better known as the UAW, began to distribute cards for employees to sign in an effort to force a vote on unionizing in late June.

"The UAW has said it wants to organize an estimated 3,500 dealers and other floor workers, about a third of Foxwoods' workforce. There has been informal discussion about attempting to organize more of the casino's workers, perhaps by involving other unions, said those familiar with the efforts.

"...Unions have had ambitions for years to organize Foxwoods and its more than 10,000 workers..."
