Union Demands Suspended Workers be Reinstated9 May 2002LAS VEGAS – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “Culinary Local 226 officials on Wednesday demanded the reinstatement of three Circus Circus workers suspended after a Friday melee in the property's employee dining room. ”The workers were suspended because of their involvement in the Friday clash, a battle described differently by the union workers and Circus Circus security. ”…Union workers claim they were passing out leaflets and chanting pro-union slogans Friday afternoon in a Circus Circus employee dining room when they were rushed by a group of security guards. ”Several workers were injured as guards pushed female housekeepers out of the way and removed chief shop steward Al Williams from a chair he was standing on as he led a group of union workers in pro-union chants, the employees claimed. ”…Company executives had a different explanation for Friday's clash. ”`Picture in your mind people trying to have a lunch and people standing and yelling. It's provocative,’ Mandalay Resort Group Senior Vice President Mike Sloan said Tuesday of Williams' organizing efforts. ”… Circus Circus security officers told police that they ordered Williams to leave the property several times, but Williams refused to leave. ”…In response to the Circus Circus incidents, [Culinary Staff Director D.] Taylor said the union is making four non-negotiable demands. ”Taylor demanded that Mandalay Resort Group immediately: ”-Turn over any videotapes they have showing the Friday clash and Williams' detention. ”-Return Williams and the other two suspended workers to work with full back pay. ”-Provide counseling services to those involved in the melee. ”-Cease all illegal activity…” |
