Union continues fight against California compact

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Californian: "A labor union continued its demand for new provisions in a Temecula-area tribe's gambling agreement with the state Wednesday, even as more of its legislative allies hinted they would support the version now on the table.

"A bill by state Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Van Nuys, would amend a 1999 agreement between California and the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians, allowing the tribe to add as many as 5,500 slot machines to the 2,000 already at its casino just south of Temecula. Padilla is one of several Democratic legislators carrying bills that would finalize agreements that five Southern California tribes negotiated with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in August.

"In a second straight day of hearings before the Senate Governmental Organization Committee, Unite-HERE Political Director Jack Gribbon protested the methods the agreements -- known as compacts -- specify for unionization elections. The union favors a system of signed cards, which it considers fairer than the secret-ballot elections outlined by the compacts…"
