Union Backs Connecticut Tribe21 June 2005CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "The president of the union that represents 50,000 casino workers across the country met Friday with the Eastern Pequots to pledge UNITE HERE's continued support as the tribe awaits final word on its pursuit of federal recognition. "John W. Wilhelm said the Eastern Pequots are entangled in a 'ridiculous legal trap' and have been 'bundled unfairly' with the concerns of wealthy residents in Fairfield and Litchfield counties who are fighting casino development in that part of the state. "…Wilhelm emphasized the benefits to eastern Connecticut should the tribe gain federal recognition and open a casino here, including thousands of new jobs. "…The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs recognized the Eastern Pequots three years ago, but a Department of the Interior appeals board overturned the decision last month based on lawsuits filed by the state and three local towns. "The BIA has until Sept. 12 to decide whether it will uphold the appeals board's decision. The tribe and its opponents are not allowed to submit additional information. "…The tribe's financial backers, Eastern Capital Development, also remain involved. "…The Eastern Pequots' decision to give workers the option to unionize is unique in Connecticut's gaming market. The region's two existing tribal casinos have repelled union efforts to attempt to organize their 20,000 workers…" |
