Union Backs Casinos at Kentucky Tracks

FLORENCE, Kentucky – As reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer: "The effort to bring casinos to Kentucky's horse tracks has picked up the support of a major Louisville labor union.

"The 18,000-member United Food and Commercial Workers Local 227 is endorsing the Kentucky Equine Education Project, or KEEP, a statewide public-awareness and lobbying effort to promote the state's $4-billion-a-year horse industry.

"KEEP, led by former Gov. Brereton Jones, a Woodford County horse breeder, has not formally taken a position on allowing racetracks to operate casinos, a gambling hybrid known as a racino.

"But members of KEEP, including Jones, support a change in state law to allow racinos.

"…Chris Sanders, general counsel for the United Food and Commercial Workers, said the union's members are backing the Kentucky Equine Education Project "'or what it wants to do with jobs in Kentucky.'

"Turfway Park President Bob Elliston, who has been actively lobbying in Frankfort for racinos, said he welcomes the union's backing and hopes other groups, including additional labor unions, come forward with support…"
