Ulster County Committee to Develop Standard Casino Procedure

KINGSTON, New York – As reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal: "As one of its first tasks, the Ulster County Casino Impact Committee will develop a standard procedure on deciding casino issues, if the county ever gets that authority.

"By drafting the protocol, committee members hope to avoid what happened at the June 9 legislative meeting. Lawmakers messily passed two casino-related resolutions weighed down with numerous amendments that tweaked their language.

"…Under current state law, counties have no say on whether a casino may be established within their borders. Pending state legislation may change that.

"One local resolution passed at the June 9 meeting adopted a 'home rule' that allowed municipalities to decide for themselves whether they wanted casinos.

"Afraid such a resolution would mean towns or villages that wanted gaming halls would automatically get them, the county decided to only accept input from municipalities in deciding whether to approve agreements with gaming entities…"
