UK Government Urged to Rethink Deregulation

6 April 2004

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Edinburgh Evening News: "The Government was today told to water down its proposed dramatic loosening of controls on gambling.

"A cross-party committee of MPs and peers was today warning deregulation could worsen problem gambling.

"…The all-party committee of both Houses at Westminster has been looking at the draft Gambling Bill which plans to remove unnecessary restrictions on the ability of the gambling business to meet punters' wishes.

"…But the joint committee says a ceiling should be imposed on the number of slot machines allowed in each casino.

"…[The] committee believes that casinos above a certain size should be confined to specific 'regeneration zones' such as Britain's ailing seaside resorts.

"…If the Government ignores the committee's recommendations, it could lose support for the Bill and possibly delay its passage into law."
