UK Gambling Laws Could Stifle Smaller Operators

LONDON – As reported by Reuters; "A revamp of 40-year-old gambling laws could stifle smaller operators and stoke public fears of Britain becoming Europe's Las Vegas, the chairman of a parliamentary inquiry says.

"Casino operators in the United States are chomping at the bit to move into Britain, and a bill to relax gambling legislation will be published on Tuesday.

"John Greenway, who chaired a parliamentary committee to examine the government's bill, told Reuters that plans under the legislation to allow restrict million-pound mega-jackpots to bigger complexes were ill-conceived, however.

"…'But they will stifle smaller casinos and they now have unions raging against the bill,' added Greenway, a member of parliament for the Conservatives.

"…The Department said only the largest casinos of 5,000 square metres or more should be allowed newly permitted high-stakes machines -- a restriction that would favour the big U.S. firms that have been eyeing the UK scene and which have the money to meet the government's size criteria…"
